Jólablót ( Yule Sacrifice ) on Winter Solstice 2009. Contemporary Icelandic pagans, members of Ásatrúarfélagið , stand in a circle around a ceremonial fire as they prepare to conduct a religious ceremony. The location is the land of Ásatrúarfélagið in Öskjuhlíð , Reykjavík . The man holding the drinking horn and ceremonial ring is Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson , allsherjargoði (Common Chieftain or High Priest). The photograph captures only a fraction of the (80 or so?) people attending the ceremony. The somewhat obtrusive recording equipment belonged, I was told, to a German TV station filming the event.
