Kagyu is the name of a family of Tibetan Buddhist lineages that emphasizes the transmission of master to disciple and oral teaching. Its history is linked to Marpa the Translator, Milarepa, and Gampopa, and over time branches such as Karma Kagyu and other lineages have emerged.

Meditation, Mahamudra teachings, and traditional Tibetan practices are central to many Kagyu lineages. Leadership structures and methods of transmission vary among lineages, so Kagyu is both an umbrella name for several lineages and, in everyday usage, can refer to a specific lineage.
