Judo Shinshu is a Japanese tradition of Pure Land Buddhism that grew out of the teachings of Shinran, a disciple of Honen. Shinran emphasized trust in the vow of Amitabha, and his community of followers developed into a religious network with various branches and institutions after his death.
This school differs from Judo-sho in its interpretation of prayer and the role of personal effort, and in later periods it found several institutional lineages. The title "Shin" in its name is part of the school's native name; it should not be taken as a mere literal translation of "true Buddhism."
